There’s some pretty amazing collaboration happening in our LISD libraries! This summer, Capitol Librarian Pam Alexander & South Librarian Tiffany Harkins sat down together and planned their entire year of library learning. Their goal was to create meaningful, engaging experiences that build on classroom learning while giving students at both campuses opportunities to explore the same concepts in creative ways. This week, the two libraries have been mirroring one another as students dive into folktales. And with today being Johnny Appleseed’s birthday, what better way to bring a folktale to life than with the story of John Chapman, aka Johnny Appleseed! Students didn’t just read different Johnny Appleseed stories; they experienced them! They tasted apples, explored apples, seeds & apple trees, read poetry, used technology, played games that reinforced contextual facts from the story, brainstormed ideas & organized their learning with graphic organizers. Through one folktale, students practiced reading comprehension, vocabulary, poetry, technology skills, critical thinking, organization & making connections between literature and the world around them. That’s what makes our LISD libraries such an important part of learning. They aren’t just places to check out books. They are places where stories become experiences, curiosity grows & learning connects across subjects. We love seeing Mrs. Alexander & Mrs. Harkins work together to create consistent, purposeful learning experiences for children across our district. Two campuses. Two libraries.
