Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day

You know today is Groundhog Day! We caught South Elementary students reading and learning about the traditional legend. On this day, traditionally, the groundhog awakens from his nap for a nice welcomed break during the winter to see if he can see his shadow. Many believe if the groundhog sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If this is so, he retrieves back into his den and goes back to sleep. If he does not see his shadow, the groundhog remains outside to play, and people celebrate believing, spring is just around the corner. South students visiting the library with Mrs. Roxanne Toney today listened to Groundhog Day by Clare Cella and learned that Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow in Pennsylvania, just like he saw his shadow in Levelland before they made their own pop-up groundhog. First graders in Ms. Linda Tucker's class were caught writing a prediction about whether they thought the groundhog saw his shadow or not, learning about the sun and shadows too! What a fun day to celebrate rodents!
