National Popcorn Day

South celebrated National Popcorn Day as students visited Mrs. Roxanne Toney's library on Tuesday and learned all about popcorn! Mrs. Roxanne Toney read Tomie dePoala's The Popcorn Book and Popcorn by Frank Asch, and then taught the children that the corn we eat and the corn we pop are two different maize varieties. South students learned the history of popcorn and the various ways it is used and prepared. They discovered that popcorn pops when exposed to heat. South students learned that Native Americans used popcorn for ceremonial embellishments and nourishment over 1,000 years ago. Popcorn has migrated to America as people adopted popcorn as a popular and healthy snack. Thank you, Mrs. Toney, for popping out of the box with student learning today!
